Motilal Oswal is an Indian businessman. He co-founded Motilal Oswal Financial Services Ltd with Raamdeo Agrawal in 1987 and serves as its founder, chairman, and managing director.
Mr. Oswal has served on the Governing Board of the BSE, Indian Merchant’s Chamber (IMC) and has also served on various committees of BSE, NSE, SEBI and CDSL. He is the President of the Jain International Trade Organisation (JITO) and has been awarded the Rashtriya Samman Patra by the Government of India for being amongst the highest income tax payers in the country for a period of 5 years.
Early life
Oswal was born into a Jain family in the little town of Padru in Barmer, Rajasthan, close to the international border. His father was a prosperous grain dealer and businessman. However, rather than entering the family business, Oswal chose to pursue formal education. He attended SPU Jain College in Falna before coming to Mumbai to pursue his CA studies. In 1987, while staying at a Mumbai hostel, Rajasthan Vidyarthi Grih Oswal met Raamdeo Agarwal, a buddy with whom he eventually created Motilal Oswal Financial Services.
Career
After working for a private audit firm for a period, Oswal and Agarwal established their accounting firm. They eventually opted to join the BSE as sub-brokers. During that time, Gujarati dealers ruled the exchange. However, the couple met a broker on the floor who helped them land a sub-broker position at the BSE. They were given a badge bearing the name Motilal Oswal, which later became the name of the company they established in 1989. Over time, both buddies defined their roles inside their organisation. While Agarwal focused on finance with his 40-person research team, Oswal oversaw customer service, human resources, operations, and franchisee network expansion.

Recognition
Oswal earned the Rashtriya Samman Patra award from the Government of India for being one of the highest-income taxpayers in the country for five years, from FY95 to FY99.
Oswal is affiliated with several social organisations. He is the President of the Jain International Trade Organisation (JITO) and a Trustee of “Agarwal-Oswal Chhatravas” of the Rajasthan Vidyarthi Griha, among other things.
He has written two books of quotations: The Essence of Business and Management and The Essence of Life.
