Mr. TN Manoharan is a fellow member of The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India and a law graduate. He has a master’s degree in commerce as well. He serves as an innovative director on the board of directors of Tech Mahindra Limited, a non-executive chairman on the board of Canara Bank, and was appointed by the Indian government to the board of Satyam Computer Services Limited, where he quickly helped bring back the former Mahindra Satyam.

In addition, Mr. Manoharan was the Chairman of the Accounting Research Foundation of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (“ICAI”) and the National Committee on Accounting Standards of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) from 2006 to 2007. In addition to serving on the Committees established by the Reserve Bank of India (“RBI”), Securities and Exchange Board of India (“SEBI”), Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA), Comptroller and Auditor General of India (“C&AG”), and Central Board of Direct Taxes (“CBDT”), he served on the Board of the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (“IRDA”) from 2006 to 2007.Currently, Mr. Manoharan serves as the Chairman of the Confederation of Indian Industry’s National Committee on Accounting Standards and Taxation. He is a member of the International Accounting Standards Board’s (“IASB”) working group that was established to make recommendations on “IFRS for SMEs” as well as the Appellate Authority. Since September 2016, he has also served as a member of the BFSI Sector’s Governing Council for Skill Development.

Career

Born in Rajakoil village, close to Gudiyatham, T. N. Manoharan (TNM) is the son of Saradammal and T.L. Narayanasamy Chowdhry, an agriculturist and Freedom Fighter. He has four decades of experience as a chartered accountant and holds a postgraduate degree in business from Sri Venkateswara University. He graduated from Madras Law College with a law degree as well. He has written books on taxes for professionals and students. In addition to continuing his work as a chartered accountant, he spent almost twenty years passionately instructing CA students in Chennai and other Southern Indian locations. Through free entry and the distribution of his textbooks, he helped pupils from lower socioeconomic classes. In India and outside, a few thousand of his students have made their homes. TNM was a visiting professor at Trichy’s BIM school.

He has spoken at IRS officer and Income Tax Appellate Tribunal member training sessions on direct taxes at Nagpur Academy and the Judicial Academy in Mumbai. He has addressed esteemed institutions in India and beyond, including reputable international universities like Southern Queensland University in Australia, Warwick University in the UK, and Chicago University in the USA, and he has delivered hundreds of papers at conferences and seminars.

He became the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India’s National President in 2006–07 after serving as a council member for six years beginning in 2001. He served as the government-appointed special director of the board that was tasked with reviving Satyam Computer Services Limited. He wrote a book called Tech Phoenix: Satyam’s 100-day Turnaround on his experiences.

From 2009 to 2011, Manoharan presided over the Confederation of Indian Industry’s (CII) committee on accounting standards and taxes. He served on several committees established by SEBI, CVC, RBI, C&AG, and CBDT. He served on the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) board of directors. He was on the advisory committee for the BFSI Sector’s skill development. He held the position of administrator of Lakshmi Vilas Bank in 2020 till its merger with DBS Bank and chairman of Canara Bank for five years until August 2020

He now serves on the Standing External Advisory Committee (SEAC) of the Reserve Bank of India, which reviews applications for Small Finance Banks and Universal Banks. He is on the boards of Mahindra & Mahindra, Tech Mahindra, and the National Bank for Financing Infrastructure and Development (NaBFID). He is also the chairman of IDBI Bank.

On October 27, 1994, he received his Masonic initiation at Lodge Accountants No. 194. He was named the Region’s Best Master in Craft in 2005, Best Zerubbabel in Chapter in 2013, and Best Mark Master in Region in 2016. Additionally, he received the Chapter and Mark honours for the finest installing officer. He served as the Grand Chaplain in 2018–2019 and the Assistant Grand Master in 2020–2021, and he was the Third Grand Principal in the Grand Chapter from 2021–2022. At the Grand Festival, which took place in Trichy on November 30, 2019, he received the GLI Outstanding Mason award for the year 2019. At the Grand Festival in Kolkata on 26 November 2022, his appointment as Regional Grand Master of Regional Grand Master of Southern India for the ensuing term of 3 years was announced.

Manoharan received the Rotary Dronacharya Award in 2022, the Lions International “Super Achiever Award” in 2006, the Rotary “Lifetime Achievement” Award in 2005, and the “For the Sake of Honour” award in 2007. In October 2009, as a member of the Satyam revival team, he was given the Finance Minister of India’s “Business Leadership Award” through NDTV-Profit. In December 2009, the Prime Minister of India presented him with the CNN IBN “Indian of the Year 2009” award. On April 7, 2010, the Indian president bestowed upon him the civic accolade known as the “Padma Shri.”
